Where AI Shines (and Helps You Shine)
Instead of replacing the critical thinking a paralegal provides, AI is poised to automate the most time-consuming, repetitive tasks, freeing up professionals for higher-level work.
- Document Review: In mass tort or complex litigation, AI can sift through hundreds of thousands of documents in hours, flagging key terms, identifying privileged information, and performing first-pass relevance checks. The paralegal’s role then shifts from finding the needle to analyzing what the needle means for the case.
- Legal Research: AI-powered research tools can move beyond simple keyword searches. They can analyze a fact pattern and surface not just relevant statutes but also conceptually similar, hard-to-find case law, providing a much richer starting point for a legal argument.
- Summarization and Chronologies: Feeding deposition transcripts or medical records into an AI tool can produce instant summaries and draft timelines. The paralegal can then spend their valuable time verifying the facts, identifying discrepancies, and building the case narrative, rather than just re-typing data.
The Irreplaceable Human Element
What AI cannot do is manage the human side of law. It cannot comfort a distressed client, negotiate an extension with opposing counsel, or apply real-world judgment to a complex ethical dilemma. It cannot “read the room” in a meeting or anticipate an attorney’s needs based on a subtle change in case strategy.
The paralegal of the future will not be the person who can manually review the most documents.
